OEM & Private Label: What's Actually Customizable
OEM and Private Label Aren't the Same Thing
The two terms get used interchangeably, but they cover different scopes. Private label typically means putting your own branding on an existing product design — your logo, your packaging, your color choices, on a product that's already in production. OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) work can go further, involving actual modifications to the product itself — a different port configuration, a custom firmware skin, a change to internal components. Sournex factories support both, but the lead time, MOQ, and cost implications differ significantly between the two.
What's Typically Customizable
- Branding — your logo on the product body, packaging, or both
- Packaging design — custom box design, inserts, manuals in your language
- Color variants — selecting from a factory's existing color/finish options, or in some cases a custom color run
- Bundling — combining accessories or components into a custom kit configuration
- Firmware/software branding — for products with a companion app or onboard interface, a custom splash screen or app rebrand in some cases
What Usually Requires a Higher MOQ
Standard private-label branding (logo + packaging) is achievable at relatively modest order volumes on most SKUs. Deeper OEM changes — a different internal component, a custom mold, hardware-level modifications — typically require a significantly higher MOQ to justify the factory's tooling or setup cost. This is worth clarifying early in the conversation rather than assuming any customization is available at the standard listed MOQ.
What to Have Ready Before You Ask
- Your logo/brand assets in a usable file format
- A rough sense of order volume — even an estimate changes what's realistically quotable
- Any regulatory requirements specific to your target market that might affect packaging or labeling
- A reference product or competitor example, if it helps communicate what you're picturing
Lead Time Reality
Customized orders take longer than sourcing an off-the-shelf listing — packaging design and approval alone typically adds real time before production starts. Building this into your planning timeline upfront avoids a scramble later if you're targeting a specific launch date.
